Tenerife Enhances Accessibility and Safety with Major Road and Public Transport Upgrades

February 19, 2025 | In Infrastructure

In a significant move to improve the infrastructure and quality of life for both residents and visitors, the Cabildo de Tenerife has embarked on a series of ambitious projects aimed at enhancing accessibility and safety across the island.

Road Rehabilitation on TF-1

One of the most notable initiatives is the ongoing rehabilitation of the TF-1 highway, a critical artery that connects various municipalities including Arico, Fasnia, and Güímar. Commencing in November 2024, this project, backed by a substantial investment of 30 million euros, is expected to conclude in March 2025. The refurbishment spans 24 kilometres of the roadway, which accommodates up to 70,000 motorists daily.

The enhancements include the revamping of the road surface, the installation of sound barriers, the repainting of signage, and the addition of safety barriers. These improvements are designed to significantly boost safety standards and efficiency on this heavily trafficked route.

Investments in La Laguna

The municipality of San Cristóbal de la Laguna has also received considerable attention, with an investment of 24 million euros in various projects aimed at addressing local demands and alleviating traffic bottlenecks. One of the key projects is the refurbishment of the TF-12 roadway in Cruz del Carmen, part of the Anaga Rural Park, which involves an investment of 3.7 million euros to optimize pavement, drainage, and signage.

Another significant project is the enhancement of traffic flow on the TF-13 in Tacoronte, La Laguna, and Canteras, with an allocation of 7 million euros. This initiative is set to benefit thousands of drivers by facilitating their journeys and minimizing waiting times during peak hours.

Modernization of Bus Stops

In addition to road improvements, the Cabildo has invested 470,000 euros in modernizing eight bus stops between Verdellada and Las Mercedes. This initiative is geared towards enhancing accessibility and improving the overall experience for public transport users.

Pedestrian Ring in La Laguna

A major project currently under construction is the Padre Anchieta pedestrian ring in La Laguna, which has an investment of 10 million euros. This project, scheduled to be completed by September 2025, aims to relieve congestion at one of the most critical points of the TF-5. According to Rosa Dávila, the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, this initiative will enhance the safety of over 20,000 students who travel through the area daily and reduce waiting times for vehicles by up to 30%.

Connectivity and Mobility Enhancements

The Chafiras-Oroteanda link project is another significant undertaking aimed at boosting mobility on the TF-1. This project, which includes the opening of the right branch in November 2024, will halve travel times in the Las Chafiras area and support the transit of over 20,000 vehicles daily.

Furthermore, the Erjos tunnel, the longest in the Canary Islands at 5,095 metres, is part of a broader initiative to enhance connectivity between northern and southern Tenerife. With an investment of 263 million euros, this project is set to reduce travel times and foster territorial cohesion.

These comprehensive upgrades reflect the Cabildo's commitment to providing quality infrastructure that facilitates mobility, enhances safety, and improves the overall quality of life for residents and visitors in Tenerife. As the island continues to experience high demand with over 3 million journeys daily and around 900,000 vehicles on the roads, these initiatives are timely and essential.
