Severe Floods Hit Malaga and Costa del Sol, Causing Widespread Disruption
A powerful red-level storm has brought chaos to the regions of Malaga and Costa del Sol in southern Spain, resulting in extensive flooding, evacuations, and significant disruptions to daily life.
Evacuations and Floods
As of November 13, hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes along the Guadalhorce riverbed due to extreme rainfall. The affected areas include inland towns such as Alora, Pizarra, and Alhaurín de la Torre, as well as coastal towns like Benalmadena. The state weather agency, Aemet, has issued a red warning that is expected to remain in place until at least 11:59 PM on Wednesday.
The heavy rainfall, predicted to reach at least 120mm per square meter, has caused severe flooding. Footage shared online shows the Hospital Clínico in Malaga filling up with water, and roads in Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar inundated with muddy floodwater. The situation is particularly dire, with drains overflowing and streets becoming impassable.
Safety Advisories
Authorities have issued critical safety advisories, including a warning from the Junta de Andalucia advising drivers to abandon their vehicles immediately if they are swept away by floodwaters. This advice comes in the wake of the recent deadly DANA floods in Valencia, where several drivers lost their lives after being swept away in their vehicles.
School Closures and Travel Disruptions
As a precautionary measure, schools across the Malaga province have been closed. Travellers are advised to monitor flight and train schedules closely, as some disruptions are expected due to the severe weather conditions.
Tornado in Marbella
Adding to the chaos, a tornado was spotted in the Costa del Sol resort of Marbella. The tornado made landfall on the popular tourist beach of Playa de Cable, with surprised onlookers capturing the event on video.
Regional Impact
The entire Costa del Sol and Axarquia regions are under an extreme risk warning due to the severe rainfall. Residents are advised to avoid all unnecessary travel and stay updated with the latest news and weather forecasts.
This severe weather event follows closely after the devastating floods in Valencia, highlighting the need for vigilance and prompt action in the face of extreme weather conditions. As the situation continues to unfold, residents and visitors alike are urged to follow all safety guidelines and stay informed.
