Princess Leonor Embarks on Historic Naval Training Voyage Aboard the Juan Sebastián de Elcano
In a significant milestone in her military training and future role as the Queen of Spain, Princess Leonor, the Princess of Asturias, is set to embark on a five-month naval training voyage aboard the iconic Spanish naval training ship, the Juan Sebastián de Elcano. This journey marks a crucial step in her military education and reinforces her commitment to the Spanish Armed Forces.
Departure and Ceremony
On January 11, 2025, Princess Leonor will officially board the Juan Sebastián de Elcano at the port of Cádiz, where she will be bid farewell by her parents, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The ceremony will also be attended by the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, and other family members of the marines.
The Voyage: XCVII Crucero de Instrucción
Princess Leonor, currently a student at the Escuela Naval Militar de Marín, will join 75 other guardiamarinas (naval cadets) of the third course for the XCVII Crucero de Instrucción. This six-month voyage will take her across thousands of nautical miles, visiting various international ports and reinforcing her technical, maritime, and cultural knowledge.
Life Onboard
During her time on the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, Princess Leonor will share the daily life of the ship's crew, which includes 188 marines, 16 officers, 21 subofficers, 35 senior corporals, and 112 corporals and sailors. Her daily routine will be marked by a demanding work regimen that includes:
- Navigation and Astronomy Practices: From handling the helm to learning navigation using the stars.
- Meteorology and Naval Maneuvers: Practical training on atmospheric phenomena and sail maneuvers on a four-masted ship.
- Maintenance Tasks: Participating in the upkeep of the ship's facilities and rigging, a maritime tradition that fosters discipline and teamwork.
- General Culture and Values: Activities designed to consolidate virtues such as responsibility, leadership, and service spirit.
Diplomatic Mission
The Juan Sebastián de Elcano is not only a training vessel but also an ambassador of Spain, promoting the country's image abroad. During the voyage, the ship will receive local authorities and international personalities, strengthening diplomatic ties and showcasing Spanish cultural richness. This aspect of the voyage aligns with the historical role of the ship, named after the navigator who completed the first circumnavigation of the globe.
Personal and Professional Development
This experience is pivotal for Princess Leonor's personal and professional growth, preparing her for her future role as the head of state. It follows in the footsteps of her father, King Felipe VI, and her grandfather, King Juan Carlos I, who also underwent military training as part of their preparation.
Pre-Voyage Activities
Before the ship sets sail, Princess Leonor and her fellow cadets will spend several days on board, engaging in routine activities and preparing for the long journey ahead. They will also visit the Ayuntamiento of Cádiz and the Escuela de Suboficiales de la Armada in San Fernando.
Traditional Blessing
On the day of departure, the cadets will visit the church of Santo Domingo to pay respects to Nuestra Señora del Rosario, also known as "La Galeona," a tradition since 1986. The image of the Virgin will accompany the ship on its voyage and return to the church upon their return in July.
This historic voyage underscores the importance the Spanish Royal Family places on military training and the understanding of state institutions. As Princess Leonor embarks on this significant journey, she is not only honing her skills as a future naval officer but also deepening her connection with the Spanish people and her role as a future leader.
