New Social Action Project Launched in Arona to Support Vulnerable Youth

November 5, 2024 | In Education

In a significant initiative to address social exclusion and educational disparities, the Patronato de Servicios Sociales (Social Services Board) of Arona has launched the Proyecto de Acción Social Urbanización Hermano Pedro (Hermano Pedro Urbanization Social Action Project). This project, set to commence in the heart of Arona Casco, aims to provide critical educational support to minors at risk of social exclusion.

Objective and Scope

The primary objective of this project is to reduce school failure rates among vulnerable minors in the primary and, in some cases, secondary education cycles. The program will be implemented by the NGO Cooperación Internacional Canarias and will focus on students from the CEIP Óscar Domínguez and other educational centers in the surrounding area. The project is designed to support children aged between 6 and 12 years, with a maximum of 25 participants and their families.

Activities and Methodology

The educational reinforcement will be conducted on weekdays, from Monday to Thursday, in the afternoons. Additionally, there will be weekly follow-up sessions on Fridays, either via phone or in person, to guide families on how to support their children over the weekends. This interdisciplinary intervention will also maintain regular communication with the educational centers to ensure a cohesive approach.

Ruth Martín, the Concejal de Servicios Sociales (Councillor for Social Services), expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its comprehensive approach. "We are very excited about this project because it works with both the students and their families. The goal is not only to reduce school failure rates but also to involve families in supervising and supporting their children in a healthy and efficient manner," she stated.

Location and Facilities

The project will be based in the local social center of the Urbanización Hermano Pedro in Arona Casco. This central location ensures easy access for the participating families and provides a conducive environment for the educational activities.

Community Involvement

The project emphasizes the importance of family involvement and community engagement. By fostering better communication between families and educational centers, it aims to create a supportive network that helps children fulfill their educational and personal responsibilities.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Patronato de Servicios Sociales to address social and educational challenges in the region, reflecting a commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable populations in Arona and beyond.
