The agreement for the construction of this bridge was signed during the Portuguese-Spanish Summit held in Faro on October 23, 2024. The project is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the Common Cross-Border Development Strategy (CBT) and is financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), a European Union funding mechanism aimed at supporting economic recovery and resilience in member states.

The Alcoutim-SanlĂșcar bridge represents an investment of approximately 13 million euros and is being developed by the Alcoutim Council. This new crossing is one of two international bridges agreed upon by the Portuguese and Spanish governments, with the other bridge planned over the Sever River between MontalvĂŁo in Portugal and Cedillo in Spanish Extremadura.
