Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Unveils 120 New High-Tech Bicycles to Enhance Urban Mobility
On October 17, 2024, the historic Plaza de Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was the backdrop for the launch of 120 new mechanical bicycles as part of the Sítycleta public bike service. This initiative marks a significant step forward in improving urban mobility in the city.
Investment and Innovation
The new fleet of bicycles, which came with a total investment of €120,000, features an innovative onboard intelligence system. This advanced technology makes the bicycles lighter and easier to use, enhancing the overall user experience. The incorporation of these high-tech bicycles is part of a broader strategy to modernize the bike fleet, aligning with the city's commitment to sustainability.
Official Remarks
José Eduardo Ramírez, the Councillor for Mobility, highlighted the importance of this renovation during the presentation. "With the addition of these 120 new mechanical bicycles, we significantly reinforce our service. This effort not only improves the quality of public transport but also promotes a more sustainable lifestyle among our citizens," Ramírez stated.

The service has recorded over 1.5 million uses, with an average loan duration of 16 minutes. Demographic data reveals that 59.5% of users are men, while 40.5% are women. The majority of users, 61.6%, fall within the age range of 31 to 50 years. Subscribers account for 89% of rentals, with only 11% being sporadic users. Notably, 13% of uses are by foreigners, with the remaining 87% by Spanish nationals. The service averages 4.5 uses per day per bicycle, with the most active stations being San Telmo and Base Naval.
Future Plans
The renovation of the Sítycleta fleet is part of a larger plan that also includes the expansion of the electric bicycle fleet in the near future. This ongoing commitment to sustainable transportation underscores Las Palmas de Gran Canaria's dedication to environmentally friendly urban mobility solutions.
For expats living in or visiting Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, this new initiative offers an enhanced and more sustainable way to navigate the city, contributing to a healthier and more environmentally conscious community.
