Government and Municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Oversee Completion of 76 Protected Housing Units
In a significant milestone for affordable housing in the Canary Islands, the Government of Canarias and the Municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have supervised the completion of 76 protected housing units in the Tamaraceite area. This project is part of a broader initiative to address the housing needs of the local population.
Key Figures and Officials Involved
The supervision of the project was led by Pablo Rodríguez, the Consejero (Councillor) of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility for the Government of Canarias, and Carolina Darias, the Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Both officials emphasized the importance of this project in providing dignified housing to the community.
Project Details
The housing complex, located in Tamaraceite, consists of a five-story building with an additional basement level. The project has been funded with an investment of 8.3 million euros, contributed by the Government of Spain, the Government of Canarias, and the Municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The complex includes 76 housing units, with a mix of two and three-bedroom apartments, as well as three units adapted for individuals with reduced mobility. Additional amenities include two community spaces on the ground floor, 35 parking spots, and 12 storage units in the basement.
Broader Housing Initiatives
This project is just one component of the comprehensive housing plan implemented by the Government of Canarias. The plan includes multiple ongoing and upcoming projects across the island. For instance, the Instituto Canario de la Vivienda (ICAVI) is currently involved in eight different housing initiatives, including projects in Ingenio, Gáldar, Teror, Telde, and Santa Lucía de Tirajana. These initiatives aim to develop over 100 new housing units and rehabilitate existing ones to improve living conditions.
Commitment to Affordable Housing
Pablo Rodríguez highlighted that housing policies have been a priority for the current administration since the beginning of this legislative term. "It's not just about building new units but also about addressing those who already live in inadequate housing. Projects like the one in Tamaraceite are essential for improving the quality of life for our citizens, ensuring everyone can enjoy dignified and quality housing," he stated.
The Government of Canarias is also focusing on the rehabilitation of over 6,000 existing public housing units, in addition to constructing new ones. This integrated approach involves close coordination with local municipalities and encourages private sector involvement to solve the housing emergency in the Canary Islands.
Community Impact
The completion of these 76 protected housing units marks a significant step towards addressing the housing needs of the local community. With a growing demand for affordable housing, this project aligns with the government's commitment to providing accessible and dignified living conditions for all residents. The inclusion of community spaces and adapted units further enhances the quality of life for the new residents, reflecting a comprehensive approach to housing that goes beyond mere construction.
