Spain Celebrates 50 Years of Democracy: Pedro Sánchez Vows to Defend Constitutional Values
In a poignant and timely address, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez inaugurated the "Spain in Freedom" program at the Reina Sofía National Museum and Art Centre in Madrid on January 8, 2025. This event marked the beginning of a year-long celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of General Francisco Franco and the subsequent transition to democracy in Spain.
A Journey to Democracy
Sánchez emphasized the significant transformation Spain has undergone since 1975, when the country embarked on a path towards democracy and freedom. He highlighted that this journey was not just a political shift but a comprehensive transformation that encompassed economic, social, and institutional changes. "Spain decided to opt for democracy and freedom. Spain decided to embark on a long and eventful process of political, institutional, social and economic transformation, which succeeded and turned us into the advanced, open, influential and tolerant country we are today," Sánchez stated.
